City of Rockingham 19 May 2023
Date19 May 2023

The City of Rockingham has commenced works on the first stage of the Rae Road Shared Path, with the project set to enhance accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists along one of the City’s main transport routes.

The first stage of the project will see the City construct a new asphalt path that is approximately three metres wide and 1.25 km long.

It will begin at the end of the existing path on Mataitai Loop and run along the southern verge of Rae Road, before finishing at the Read Street intersection.

At times during the project a single lane closure for westbound traffic along Rae Road will be in place, while there will also be a signed detour route for cyclists and pedestrians.

In the long term, the Rae Road Shared Path will be approximately 7 km long and will be delivered in several stages. Once complete it will run along Rae Road, Garden Island Highway and Safety Bay Road before finishing at the Esplanade near Palm Beach.

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said construction on the first stage of the Rae Road Shared Path was expected to be finished by mid-June.

“The Rae Road Shared Path is an integral part of the City of Rockingham’s Long Term Cycle Network Plan, and it will create an important east/west link in the heart of our City,” Mayor Hamblin said.

The City is pleased to be starting work on the first stage, and looks forward to pedestrians and cyclists being able to utilise the path in the near future.

Stage one of the Rae Road Shared Path will cost $750,000, with the City securing a grant from the Department of Transport (DoT) to cover 50% of the cost.
