Ground broken in stage 1 of Ghungalu Nunee Gardens project

Elder Patricia Leisha and Custodians Tracey Gyemore and Sharleen Leisha attended the ground breaking ceremony of the Ghungalu Nunee Gardens site, in Blackwater on 27 April 2023.
The plans for the site have been developed in consultation with the Ghungalu people and fencing will be erected on 24 May with work commencing shortly after.
A Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony was delivered by Elder Patricia Leisha, with council representatives and construction partner, Activ Civil representatives present.
‘The garden will provide residents and visitors with the experience of being ‘on- country’,’ Mayor Kerry Hayes said.
‘Engagement with the Ghungalu people helped shape the design to include a combination of large water features and planted ‘rooms’ which showcase various aspects of terrain such as wallaby scrub, gumby gumby trees and examples of medicinal trees with metal art, representing key fauna,’ he continued.
Stage 1 works will begin in the next few weeks which will include:
Removing all structures and concrete slabs Relocating existing water main Excavation and earthworks to form batters, swales, mounds, pathway alignments and other elements Construction of dam and wetlandsThis project has been co-funded by Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).
