North Coast Road upgrade major milestone

A major milestone was achieved for North Coast Road, Point Turton, with the sealing of a 1.82km section of road on Wednesday, 24 May.

Upgrades to the section of road started on 30 January and have now reached the final stages with another seal to be applied during the warmer months.

Yorke Peninsula Council received $1,141,000 through the Special Local Roads Program’s Supplementary Local Road Funding for stage one of the works.

The upgrade of the road is a result of years of advocacy from Yorke Peninsula Council and local residents.

The total cost of stage one is estimated to be $2,298,000 with Council contributing $1,157,000 towards the project.

Stage one includes sealing, earthworks, stormwater management including the installation of stormwater drainage infrastructure, road delineation and installation of traffic control devices.

Following a Request for Tender process, Downer was appointed as the successful contractor for stage one.

“The upgraded road will make it safer for all who navigate this route,” Mayor Darren Braund said.

“The improvements to drainage, road alignment and surfacing will be a noticeable welcome change to the increasing regional tourism traffic along the stretch, and to the wider community served by North Coast Road.

“This project has been at least a decade in the making.”

Future works are expected to be completed in stages, subject to future grant funding and Council endorsement.

Stage two is expected to include a similar seal length as stage one; stage three won’t include sealing but will create a better surface for the remainder of the road.

Council has recently applied to the SLRP for funding contribution towards stage 2.

“Subject to successful grant funding contribution, Council looks forward to continuation of the great outcomes achieved to date,” Mr Braund said.
