World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 15 June, raises awareness of elder abuse and the various ways it can manifest, such as financial, emotional or physical abuse.
The day brings together our older citizens, their caregivers, community and governments to combat the issue of elder abuse.
Cardinia Shire Council continues its commitment to eliminate elder abuse through Together We Can. Everyone can help stop and prevent family violence in Cardinia Shire by reporting older citizens subjected to violence, coercion or abuse. Residents can help to create a safe community that values equality and respect.
Cardinia Shire Mayor, Councillor Tammy Radford, said, “Through increased awareness and education, the entire community can help stop elder abuse. Older members of the community will benefit from being better informed to take proactive measures that improve their safety, confidence and resilience.”
Council will host an event on Thursday 15 June. There will be a special guest speaker from Seniors Rights Victoria to talk about elder abuse, risk, prevention, and where to get support and assistance. Afternoon tea and take-home information will be provided.
