The Town of Cambridge is poised to honour the dedicated efforts of the community that played an integral role in preventing development from going ahead on the beloved Mt Claremont Playing Fields.

Mayor Keri Shannon's motion at a Council meeting on 23 May sought approval to place a plaque and a symbolic Tuart tree at the corner of McClemans and Fortview roads, which would symbolise the community's resilience and collective action, and Planning Minister Hon Rita Saffioti’s courage and commitment to orderly planning.

Mayor Shannon emphasised the need to acknowledge the tireless work of numerous community members who rallied to protect the Mt Claremont Fields.

A plaque will be installed to acknowledge the decision by Minister Saffioti, with assistance and support from Member for Nedlands Dr Katrina Stratton MLA, and the local community for their unwavering dedication to preserving the Mt Claremont Fields for future generations.

The Town’s administration fully supports the installation of a plaque and a symbolic Tuart tree at the suggested location.

Renowned for their stately and iconic presence, Tuart trees will serve as a reminder of the significant victory achieved through the collective efforts of the community.

The planting ceremony is scheduled for late June 2023, with Mayor Shannon, Cambridge Councillors, special guests, and residents in attendance.
