The legacy of George Patchett, a former local ranger of the Endowment Lands Limekiln Estate who resided at Perry House from 1947 to 1962 may be immortalised at Perry Lakes Reserve.
The Town of Cambridge’s Council voted in favour of beginning the process of renaming an internal road surrounding Perry Lakes as Patchett's Walk, and another internal road after his trusted companion, Snooky the horse.
Patchett was a dedicated steward of the Perry Lakes and Limekiln estate and lived at Perry House. It is important the Town pays tribute to the local legend and his equine sidekick for their significant contributions.
The naming will also improve wayfinding within Perry Lakes Reserve, which lacks official names for its internal road network, currently identified as Roads A, B, C, and D.
To ensure the chosen names are appropriate, a local historian will conduct research, considering other names mentioned in the Perry Lakes Management Plan and adhering to Landgate naming conventions.
While there is currently no known indigenous name for Perry Lakes Reserve, efforts will be made to explore indigenous names, in further consultation with Traditional Owners. Additional historic figures who played a significant role in the area may also be recognised.
Practical features of the roads will also be considered when exploring names, including how visitors to Perry Lakes Reserve use the road to access local destinations including the Alderbury Sports Pavilion, Scout Hall, and playground.
Community consultation will precede the official request for registration with Landgate.
The Town of Cambridge remains committed to preserving its history and providing an enriching experience for Perry Lakes Reserve visitors.
