The Town of Cambridge is taking proactive steps to boost tree protection during property development.
At a meeting on 23 May, Councillors approved proposed changes to Policy 100 Tree Protection During Property Development, which aim to provide stronger safeguards and ensure the long-term sustainability of the urban forest.
A comprehensive review highlighted the need for improved compliance and monitoring of tree protection during development. Currently, inspections occur only in response to complaints.
The proposed changes are set to offer greater protection to trees adjacent to development sites and hold developers accountable for preserving the natural environment.
Key aspects of the changes include:
- The need for an arborist report and Tree Maintenance Plan as part of the development application process
- Implementing a tree protection bond held by the Town
- Installation of tree protection fencing
- Conducting comprehensive assessments before and after construction.
These measures aim to minimise the impact of development on trees and prevent their decline or loss.
The Town of Cambridge is proposing new fees and charges to cover the cost of providing enhanced services and increased compliance measures. Additional resources will be allocated to ensure effective implementation of the revised policy conditions.
The Town acknowledges the importance of its diverse tree canopy and recognises the risks posed by climate change, pests, diseases, and development pressures.
By strengthening tree protection measures, the Town aims to preserve its urban forest, enhance the beauty of the area, and promote sustainable practices.
The Town remains committed to fostering community involvement in tree protection efforts and encourages active participation from residents and developers alike.
