Get bushfire ready with Redlands Coast community information sessions
Redland City Council 26 May 2023

Redlands Coast residents are encouraged to get ready for bushfire season by attending one of the upcoming bushfire information sessions being held from 6 June.

Redland City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Karen Williams said the high percentage of rural and bushland areas across Redlands Coast meant a correspondingly higher bushfire risk.

“We are extremely proud of our unique blend of residential, rural, coastal and bushland lifestyles, however with so many large rural blocks and the amount of land zoned for environmental and conservation uses, the risk of bushfire is heightened,” Cr Williams said.

“The fires on North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah in 2014 and 2019 should be powerful reminders of the potential devastation that can happen during bushfire season.

“Council is partnering with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to help all of us better understand how to prepare our homes in the event of a bushfire through a series of community information sessions.”

The sessions will focus on general bushfire awareness and the ways in which Redlands Coast residents can prepare themselves and their properties.

They will also highlight the new Australian Warning System for fires, which aims to provide consistent warnings, replacing a variety of different warning systems across Australia.

“Residents will be able to ask questions relevant to their own situation and get some guidance on putting together their own Bushfire Survival Plan,” Cr Williams said.

“It’s important that every resident has the information they need to take the precautions that could potentially save their home or property.

“Being prepared means being responsible for safeguarding what’s important to you.”
