The Town of Cambridge held a community safety engagement meeting at the Leederville Town Hall on Wednesday, 22 March 2023 in response to growing concerns about crime in West Leederville.
Mayor Keri Shannon called for the meeting after a rise in vehicle and home break-ins over summer 2022. The meeting offered an opportunity for members of the West Leederville community to express their concerns as well as discuss options to boost security in the area.
Wembley Police and Neighbourhood Watch representatives attended the meeting where local police confirmed that theft of valuables from vehicles was the number one crime in West Leederville, serving as a reminder to take any valuables with you when parking your car. Neighbourhood Watch representatives shared helpful information on crime prevention and safeguarding homes and belongings. This phase of the community safety engagement process gave the Town of Cambridge a good foundation to revise and refurbish the current Community Safety Strategic Plan, particularly targetting West Leederville’s specific safety concerns. Recommended actions are to be reviewed and budgeted for Council approval.
