Wetland Explorer Pass

This year, we have created a fun-filled passport program activity for kids and families (and big kids at heart) called the Wetland Explorer Pass. The Wetlands weekend is a great learning environment and what better way to learn and explore more than through the Explorer Pass.

Collect an Explorer Welcome Pack from the Kuril & Currawong wetland ecology stall next door to Koinmerburra Aboriginal Corporation stall.

Find the Wetland Adventurer activities and start your journey!  Once all stamps are collected (you must collect at least 6 stamps from the 10 activities), return them to the Kuril & Currawong stall to receive your prize.

This year there will be 10 activities on offer, of which participants can complete any 6 of their choice.

Wetlands Birder (festival grounds):  Cut outs of common wetland birds that occur on the St Lawrence Wetlands have been hidden within sight of the participants stall.  The stall will also have an ID guide for those birds.  To get a stamp, the participant must find, match and ID five wetland birds.   Wetland Bingo (wetlands):  A simulated wetland made from samples from the St Lawrence Wetlands are set up alongside a wetland bingo sheet.  Participants need to find three things in a row in their wetland and have them signed off by the leader to get a stamp.   Chemistry Whiz (festival grounds):  Water samples will be provided from two wetlands, one that is healthy and one that is unhealthy.  The leader will walk the students through some common water chemistry tests to record what are the chemical indicators of poor water quality.   Links in the Chain (festival grounds):  The leader of this activity will be provided with a jar containing a sample from the wetlands with a range of animals and plants in it, and a set of cards representing some of the things that will be present in the jar.  The participant needs to match three things they can see in the jar to their respective card and create a food chain with them to feed the Barramundi at the top.   Water Colour (festival grounds):  A gallery of colouring in sheets and drawings will be created at the participating stall.  Participants colour in a threatened species sheet or draw a picture of the wetlands and contribute this to the gallery.  In recognition of their time spent learning about the wetlands they will receive a traditional face painting from Koinjmal TO’s.  Once completed you will receive your stamp.   Build and Bounce (festival grounds):  A set of instructions showing the participant how to fold a jumping origami frog will be provided.  Once the participant has folded their frog, the leader will give it googly eyes, then the participant jumps their frog into the pond for a stamp.   Ephemeral Artist (festival grounds):  Costa will be leading people in creating an ephemeral art piece to celebrate the wetlands.  Collect natural objects from around the festival and wetlands and contribute them to Costa’s artwork for a stamp.   Plant Match (festival grounds): A tree planting will also be held as part of the festival.  Participants will learn about the species being planted by matching a baby tree to the samples and descriptions provided for a stamp.   Bird Watcher (guided tour):  go along on BirdLife Queensland’s guided bird watching walk for a stamp.   Wetland Wanderer (guided tour):  go along on Jack and Renee’s guided wetland tour for a stamp.
