The City continues to foster important community connections through hosting and supporting a range of cultural, artistic and inclusive events, as well as progressing planning on accessible facilities.

Summer Events Series

The free Symphony Under the Stars, headlined by the Perth Symphony Orchestra, concert proved to be a hit with families earlier this year, with thousands rocking out at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex.

The concert was a highlight of our jam-packed family-friendly Summer Event Series that included markets, sideshows, an arts festival and a Christmas Fiesta.

Accessible community facilities and buildings

Planning continues on key City projects including Riverlinks All Abilities Playground in Clarkson and Dordaak Kepap Library and Youth Innovation Hub in Landsdale.

The Riverlinks project will create an inclusive space where children of all ages and all abilities can visit and the City has engaged our Disability Access and Inclusion Reference Group throughout the planning process.

The library and youth innovation hub’s name Dordaak Kepap, meaning Place of Living Waters, was chosen through consultation with Noongar elders and community members to reflect the site the facility will sit on, overlooking Broadview Park.

Neurodiverse pilot program

Wanneroo Regional Museum now has sensory backpacks available for public use, one of a series of new initiatives to welcome visitors of all abilities.

The backpacks are part of the City’s neurodiverse audience pilot program, which includes the backpacks, as well as online visual stories, a choice board and a sensory friendly map developed in collaboration with disability support provider Rocky Bay.

Cultural activities and events

The City also proudly supported local 2023 NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Action week events through our Community Flagship Funding.

The City has up to $5,000 available per grant for successful applicants hosting National Reconciliation Week (27 May-3 June) and NAIDOC Week (2-9 July) activities and events.

Mayor Linda Aitken said offering free community events and developing and upgrading accessible facilities continued to deliver value for money for residents and ratepayers.

“From place activation activities like the Rocca Way pop-up, to hosting cultural fiesta Celebrate Girrawheen, the City hosted many free events and opportunities for our community to connect,” she said.

“We proudly offer a range of facilities and activities that promote healthy lifestyles, as well as access and inclusion, giving our residents many ways to interact and express themselves.”

The City received a $2.6 million State Government contribution for the Riverlinks All Abilities Playground, as well as $3 million for the Dordaak Kepap project.
