Amaroo Park Opens With A New Vision Of Inclusive Play

Published on 09 June 2023

Today marked a milestone for our community as Mayor Maurice Collison, our State Member for Upper Hunter, Dave Layzell, and the Infrastructure Services Team officially opened the revamped Amaroo Park.

This inclusive play space, largely funded by the NSW Government's Everyone Can Play program and the Upper Hunter Shire Council, is a testament to the belief that everyone, regardless of age or ability, should have a place to play, relax, and connect.

Mayor Collison and Mr. Layzell, in conjunction with the dedicated Infrastructure Services Team, worked tirelessly to ensure this transformative project stayed true to its guiding principles despite a need to scale back initial plans due to budget constraints.

The new Amaroo Park includes a host of recreational options, such as swings, talking tubes, spinners, a basketball hoop, a soccer goal, table tennis, and a learn-to-ride bike track. Additionally, there's ample green space for unstructured recreation, BBQ facilities, and seating areas, all designed to encourage community bonding and interaction.

"We know that change can be challenging, and many held a fondness for the old playground," Mayor Collison said. "But we're confident that our new Amaroo Park, with its focus on inclusivity and accessibility, will bring even greater benefits and enjoyment to our diverse community."

The Everyone can Play program is a $20 million commitment to inclusive play spaces across NSW. Together with the NSW Government, Upper Hunter Shire Council is delivering infrastructure that is essential for communities, increasing access to open space.

The NSW Government is contributing $74,000 to Amaroo Park, with Council funding a further $132,068 on the transformative project.
