Under the theme, ‘For Our Elders’, this year’s NAIDOC week will occur nationally from 2 to 9 July 2023.
But in the Central Highlands, NAIDOC is celebrated over a ‘month and a bit’, stretching events that kick off on 23 June and continue through to the end of July.
‘We want to give everyone in our towns the opportunity to participate in this important celebration,’ said Mayor Kerry Hayes.
NAIDOC is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures while participating in regional community events.
Everyone is welcome to attend events at the following locations:
‘I especially like this year’s theme of ‘for our elders’, Mayor Hayes continued.
‘Elders play a special role in shaping our communities. They guide our generations and teach us through their years of experience.
‘In everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait elders deserve to be celebrated for their contributions to our region,’ he said.
Bring your community spirit and connect with your local elders this year.
