The latest project from the Fremantle Recycling Centre is here! An amazing large scale Lighthouse sculpture which doubles as a bin for containers for change.
Containers for change is a state-wide container deposit scheme that lets you cash in eligible containers for 10-cents each, with the goal to reduce litter and landfill, increase recycling and help raise funds for the Fremantle community.
The vision and idea for the project came from Senior Refund Point Operator Tamika Payne, inspired by the port and seaside setting of Fremantle.
Local artist Blake Poole designed and built the lighthouse over the past two months.
The lighthouse sculpture is sourced from 100% recycled and reused local materials including pieces of an Old Webber BBQ top, dartboard rim, beer barrels, potbelly stove and ship door.
Blake says it was great to be able to put together a piece with its form and aesthetics just as strong as its function.
The sculpture will be filled with eligible containers: including juice boxes, fizzy drink containers, alcohol containers like beer bottles and pre-mixed spirits and any plastic water or fizzy drink containers under 3L.
Keep your eye out at City events and the Fremantle Recycling Centre for the Lighthouse as we see how many containers for change we can fit inside!
Returning containers is not just about keeping them out of Landfill and saving the planet but being able to have a direct and visible impact on the Fremantle community.
The streets are cleaner, community groups are raising much-needed funding and there are more jobs being created every single day.
Eligible containers can be dropped off at the City of Fremantle Containers for Change Refund Point at 83 Knutsford Street, Fremantle.
