Help us help Koalas! Join CHRC and Toyota in planting 250 eucalyptus trees for National Tree Day

Residents of Emerald and surrounding communities are invited to join Central Highlands Regional Council and Central Highlands Toyota in planting 250 trees for National Tree Day!
This year’s project will be in the Emerald Botanic Gardens near the rotunda entrance on Sunday 30 July 2023 starting at 10.00 am, with a sausage sizzle to follow.
As of February 2022, koalas were listed as endangered animals by the Australian Government.
Last year a family of koalas were spotted in the Emerald Botanic Gardens. Council’s Parks and Gardens team even installed new signage near John Gaye Bridge to warn drivers of possible passing koalas.
To assist these furry friends further, council has decided to plant eucalyptus trees as a primary food source for koalas whilst they’re visiting the gardens.
‘This is a great initiative for the community to get amongst because it will be helping to save our most iconic native animals,’ said Mayor Kerry Hayes.
‘This family-friendly event encourages our community to participate in council’s projects, meet new neighbours, and work together.’
In addition to planting trees, participants can enjoy a free sausage sizzle, learn about koalas and pick up some free merchandise from Toyota
National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Since 1996, over 26 million trees have been planted by over 5 million volunteers.
