Knock, knock! Who is it? A koala
City of Wodonga 22 Jun 2023

This cute and furry koala was a little lost when he made his way to the door of a Wodonga property.

While a little spooked, the koala scurried off into the darkness of the night and did not require assistance.

Despite their cute appearance, koalas are wild animals and can be dangerous when approached or if you try to catch or handle one.

Koalas regularly visit suburban gardens.

If they can get in they can usually get out again unassisted.

However, if you do come across a koala that needs assistance, there are things you can do to help.

After speaking to a trained wildlife rescuer, you may be asked to try and carefully restrain an injured animal if it is on the ground as you wait for the wildlife rescue group to arrive.

If the koala is not handled carefully, it can harm the animal further or cause injury to you with its teeth or sharp claws.

Assessing if it is safe to do so, approach the koala from behind and place a washing basket, or a similar item with ventilation, over the animal.

Put something heavy on top of the basket to stop the koala moving away and climbing a tree.

If you see a koala on the ground for an extended period of time, a koala that appears to be injured, or a joey without its mother, contact rescue group WIRES - Wildlife Rescue 1300 094 737.
