Tree Planting Program Keeps Growing

Published on 22 June 2023

More than 600 trees will be added to the Town of Cambridge during this year’s Winter Tree Planting Program.

A way of boosting our urban canopy, the planting program ultimately aims to add a tree to every available verge across the Town.

Now underway, the planting program will result in a grand total of 645 trees being planted - 344 new street trees and 301 new park trees.

Mayor Keri Shannon said the annual winter planting program supported the Town's Urban Forest Strategy, which was all about boosting local tree canopy, selecting appropriate trees for the Town and raising awareness of the importance of street trees.

“With canopy coverage in the Town decreasing from 20 per cent in 2014 down to 18.6 per cent in 2022, it’s a vital program to help respond to these figures,” Mayor Shannon said.

“We are all accustomed to our beautiful leafy streetscapes and diverse urban canopy here in Cambridge, and the winter tree planting program is a viable way we can work to maintain these stunning surrounds.”

Trees are one of the Town's most important natural assets with more than 24,000 Council-owned trees lining local streets and adding life to parks.

Among their many benefits, street trees provide habitats for local fauna, reduce water run-off and increase property values.
