Edward River Council is stepping up its support for the move to electric vehicles with the first electric vehicle charging stations to be installed in Cressy Street Deniliquin.
Council has successfully received funding through the NSW Government Office of Energy and Climate Change for two Electric Vehicle charging sites which are expected to be operational within the next eight months with assistance from the Riverina and Murray Joint Organisation and ChargeWorks.
The charging sites, to be located in Cressy Street, will provide fast and reliable charging for residents and visitors passing through Deniliquin.
“We’re seeing an increase nationally in the number of people choosing to drive electric vehicles,” said Mayor Cr Peta Betts.
“However, the lack of accessible charging stations in rural and regional areas is a deterrent to these drivers making their way to our part of the country. Being able to provide public charging stations is a very positive step to ensuring we can cater to this growing market and attract more people to Edward River,” she said.
Council has seen an increased number of enquiries from locals and tourists for public charging stations. Located close to our cafes, public amenities, Waring Gardens, our retailers and the Peppin Heritage Centre.
“The charging stations will also provide indirect financial benefits to the local economy as visitors explore downtown Deniliquin while their vehicle is charging. We expect to see flow on commercial activity to our local businesses from this initiative,” she said.
Council investigated and submitted several locations within town, with Waring Gardens and the surrounding shopping precinct location best fitting the requirements of the funding guidelines. Deniliquin Business Chamber Executive, Donna Taylor, said “The Chamber is very supportive of these charging sites and sees it as a win for both locals and tourists who will find that Deniliquin can be included in their travel routes.”
