The Town of Cottesloe is excited to announce that work has commenced on a new playground in East Cottesloe.
As part of the Town’s Public Open Space and Playground Strategy, which was adopted by Council in November 2019, the Town’s 13 Public Open Space areas were evaluated and grouped into high, medium and low priority. The Railway and Albion Street and Purple Dinosaur playgrounds along the train line in East Cottesloe were deemed as medium priority, having limited functionality and presenting the unique opportunity to amalgamate the play spaces together.
At the May 2023 Council Meeting the tender for construction of the East Cottesloe playground was awarded to Nature Based Play, a leader in designing and creating nature based play spaces for all ages.
The East Cottesloe playground upgrade will be funded through the Town’s public open space cash-in-lieu allocation ($445,000) and a $20,000 contribution from the Department of Transport.
Town of Cottesloe Mayor Lorraine Young said, “We are very excited that work has commenced on East Cottesloe playground, this is our second playground upgrade since adopting the Public Open Space and Playground Strategy.
“Upgrade of the Albion and Railway Street and Purple Dinosaur playgrounds were on hold for some time while we worked on what we wanted to achieve at this space, and we are very much looking forward to bringing this upgrade to fruition.
“We are grateful for the support received from the State Government to assist us in delivering this for our community to enjoy for many years to come.”
The new East Cottesloe playground will feature local natural materials to create an organic play space with balancing logs, bush posts, a fairy bridge, fossil rocks, and a basket swing. It will also feature a bicycle skills track for beginner riders.
The playground will be set within the space along the train line from Albion Street to Perth Street, where the Purple Dinosaur playground was located. The Purple Dinosaur was carefully removed prior to construction commencing and is being safely stored at the Town’s depot facility until the new playground is ready.
Weather permitting, construction of the new East Cottesloe playground will be completed and open for use in late 2023.
