Following endorsement from Council at its ordinary meeting on Tuesday 27 June 2023, the City of Rockingham’s Draft Strategic Community Plan (2023–2033) (SCP) is now open for public comment.
The SCP defines the community’s vision and aspirations for the future, and provides the overarching plan to guide the City’s development over the next decade.
Commencing in late 2022 the City engaged extensively with the community to inform the development of the SCP, with 4,645 contributions coming from a range of surveys, workshops and pop-up consultations at events and City facilities. This is the highest number of contributions for a SCP the City has ever received.
Residents identified what they loved about living in the City, and what they would like the City to look like in 10 years’ time. From this comprehensive feedback a vision statement was created to capture the community’s desired future. The vision is: ‘A quality lifestyle. A sustainable future’. This vision is supported by five key aspirations:
Social: A family-friendly, safe and connected community.Natural environment: A place of natural beauty where the environment is respected.Build environment: A built environment carefully planned for today and tomorrow.Economic: A vibrant economy creating opportunities.Leadership: Transparent and accountable leadership and governance.Mayor Deb Hamblin said community members’ love of the natural environment was a feature of the consultation, especially being surrounded by natural bush, and a lifestyle based on proximity to beautiful beaches and the ocean.
“Residents made it clear that when planning for the future we need to respect the beauty of our natural environment alongside carefully planned developments such as a vibrant foreshore, and infrastructure that provides connectivity inside and outside of the City” Mayor Hamblin said.
There was a strong focus on being a safe, family-friendly City where everyone can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle.“In addition, our residents see the City of Rockingham as a regional centre. They want to work, live and play here, and maintain a sense of self-sufficiency. They want to see the City developing from within, with the workforce being up-skilled and local businesses growing.”
“We thank the thousands of community members who contributed to the creation of this Strategic Community Plan. The City now encourages residents to read the draft and share their thoughts with us.”
Public comment will close on 28 July 2023. The SCP is expected to return to Council in August 2023.
