A trendy new pastime known as ‘plogging’ is now part of Logan City Council’s free and low-cost health and wellbeing program.
Plogging involves jogging while picking up litter.
The word combines jogging with ‘plocka upp’ which is Swedish for pick-up.
Plogging sessions will kick off in the City of Logan in July as part of Council’s next year-long Active & Healthy program.
Sameer Punde, from the social enterprise WorkEco, will run free plogging sessions between 5.30pm and 6.30pm each Wednesday from July 12 to December 6 (not including school holidays) at Logan River Parklands in Beenleigh.
Mr Punde wants to encourage more people to do something for the environment.
He said he had participated in beach and river clean-ups and run bushwalking sessions at a number of locations.
Council’s Active & Healthy program delivers more than 200 free and low-cost physical activity, health and wellbeing activities for all ages.
It aims to promote good health and physical activity across four key categories - fitness, health and wellbeing, stretching and movement and sport, recreation and outdoors.
Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall said Council had added a range of interesting new activities, such as plogging, as part of an annual update.
“The program offers activities tailored to people of all ages, genders, abilities and cultural backgrounds,” Cr Hall said.
“There’s plenty on offer to meet everyone’s interests and fitness levels as they embark on their own personal health and wellbeing journey.”
Active & Healthy program booklets are available at Council customer service centres or libraries or by calling 3412 3412 to request a copy.
