The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for partial demolition, new building for educational and occasional care, signage, front fencing, landscaping, and associated works at the Hutchins School, 71 Nelson Road, Sandy Bay.

The proposal includes the construction of a new ‘Signature Building’ fronting Nelson Road where currently existing sports fields are located below the Senior School buildings, which is estimated to cost $19M.

The proposed building will act as a multipurpose facility to be used for the gathering of the entire school as well as providing indoor sports facilities. The building includes a multipurpose auditorium and sports hall, offices, gymnasium, and amenities.

The development is intended to improve the facilities and amenities associated with the school as a whole. There is no intention to increase classrooms or teaching spaces and there will be no increase in student or staff numbers.

Signs will utilise the magenta colour with separated lettering and the school's logo, while the proposal includes surrounding landscaping with native vegetation, and four signs.

Further information about the proposal can be found in the agenda for the Planning Committee on the City of Hobart website.
