Airstrip upgrades complete

Yorke Peninsula Council has completed much-needed upgrades at two of its airstrips.

The general aviation area at Maitland has been extended and given a new seal while at Yorketown, Council has improved air landing safety with the provision of new pilot-activated lighting.

Director of Assets and Infrastructure Andre Kompler said the surface at Maitland should now last longer.

“Additionally the balance of runway, taxiway and general aviation area was crack repaired, provided with a highly resilient two-coat rubberised seal along with new line marking,” Mr Kompler said.

“The Maitland project was delivered at a cost of $296,482 against a project budget of 299,840, with the Federal Government contributing $239,840 in grant funding from the Regional Airports Program.”

Mr Kompler said Yorketown airstrip’s lighting has been a longstanding issue with several grant funding opportunities previously explored.

“In 2022, a grant application to the State Government under the Support Regional Aviation Program Round 7 was successful,” Mr Kompler said.

“The project in the amount $196,738 was funded via a $100,000 grant, with Council funding the balance.”
