Mental health and wellbeing in focus

Following the announcement that a Social Inclusion Action Group (SIAG) will be established in Benalla, Council is seeking expressions of interest from individuals, not-for-profits and businesses interested in improving community mental health, wellbeing and support.

The new project, inspired by the findings of the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health system, will be led by Benalla Rural City Council program coordinator Matt Debreceny.

‘The group aims to empower the local community to improve social connections and foster inclusion, ultimately supporting mental health and overall wellbeing,’ Mr Debreceny said.

‘The Benalla SIAG recognises the value of community insights and believes that involving community members is crucial in enhancing social connections and promoting inclusion.

‘Through promoting and improving social connections, our goal is to create an environment that supports mental health and overall well-being by involving our diverse community.

‘We firmly believe that communities possess valuable insights and can play a significant role in improving social connections and inclusion,’ Mr Debreceny said.

To ensure that the SIAG truly represents the community it serves, individuals from various backgrounds and lived experiences are encouraged to join. This includes those who have personal experience with mental health, First Nation Peoples, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities and their carers, and people from culturally diverse communities.

‘By embracing the diversity within our community, we aspire to create initiatives that benefit everyone,’ Mr Debreceny said.

‘We are eager to learn from the experiences of our community and look forward to seeing the positive impact of these locally driven efforts.’

Council invites interested individuals, businesses and groups to express their interest in joining the Social Inclusion Action Group. Visit www.benalla.vic.gov.au/siag or contact Matt Debreceny on 0484 025 974 for more information. Expressions of interest close at midnight on 13 August 2023.
