Hobart residents are being asked to team up with their neighbours to host a local get together and the best part is that all the logistics will be taken care of by the City of Hobart.
The My Street events will be held in suburban streets or parks and feature roving entertainment, food vans, and more.
City of Hobart Acting Lord Mayor Cr Helen Burnet said each event will be a collaboration between the City of Hobart and residents who apply.
“Each My Street event will be as unique as the community hosting it. It could involve a talent show, a clothing swap, a food-making contest, a scavenger hunt, a circus workshop, or even a bush dance.
“We encourage you to get creative, lean on the multitude of talent in your community, and celebrate you and your neighbours and neighbourhood,” Cr Burnet said.
Creative City Portfolio Chair Cr John Kelly said the key is to keep the events local and intimate.
“They can be as small as having 20 neighbours get together, or as large as a 250-person park celebration.
“My Street events will start rolling out over the coming months and we will work flexibly with local residents to find a day and a time that suits their neighbourhood,” Cr Kelly said.
My Street is part of the City’s Out in the Open season, designed to get the community back outdoors as we start heading into spring and was a great success in 2022.
Lenah Valley resident Tanya Brooks-Cooper was part of a three person organising group for a My Street event last year attended by around 250 locals.
“Our Lenah Valley Street Party really brought our community together for a lovely night of family fun,” Ms Brooks Cooper said.
“People chatted, danced, ate, sang along to the bands, kids played on the hill and roasted marshmallows, and everyone was smiling.
“If you saw the program and are sitting on the fence - jump off! The council team go out of their way to make the events easy to organise.
“You bring the ideas and share the word. They do the hard work behind the scenes to make it look amazing. It was so much fun we can't wait to do it again!”
