Wyndham City’s new Public Toilet Policy will ensure residents have access to safe and clean toilets, contributing to Wyndham being a liveable and accessible City.
The existing distribution of public toilets across Wyndham is not equitable with gaps in provision meaning that Council receives about 12 requests for new public toilets annually.
The new Policy provides direction for the provision of public toilets across the district passive open space network, where longer stays are encouraged, as they offer higher levels of play, BBQ facilities and parking.
Wyndham Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, welcomed the policy. “A lack of public toilets limits the community’s use of these spaces,” she said.
“To achieve the vision set out in Plan Melbourne for liveable neighborhoods, facilities such as public toilets must be available in our open space network.”
“Council has mapped current facilities, identified issues with provision and management, and developed an Implementation Framework - this result being a destination-based approach to provision.”
The provision of public toilets along linear open space corridors, such as the coastline and the Werribee River, is proposed to be linked to key destinations along each corridor, and clear signage to toilets in adjacent or nearby open spaces and facilities will be provided. The same approach will be applied to Activity Centres.
“The community has supported the policy, which guides the provision of public toilets across the parks and open space network via four new decision-making principles.”
“Public toilets offer added value to our parks and open spaces, which attract more visitors and families when public toilets are available, supporting community wellbeing.”
