Upcoming local government election – your opportunity to shape our community!

The next local government election is scheduled for 16 March 2024 with nominations closing in February (date to be announced early 2024).

The local government election will allow our community to elect dedicated and passionate individuals to serve as mayor and councillors for Central Highlands Regional Council for the next four years.

As an essential pillar of democracy, local government plays a critical role in decision-making that directly impacts the lives of residents. Whether you have a long-standing commitment to community service or are inspired to make a difference for the first time, the role of a councillor is an opportunity to contribute significantly to the development and well-being of our region.

Elected members of council do not need to be affiliated with a political party, as all councillors run as individuals. Councillors serve the whole of Central Highlands region with no geographical divisions.

Chief Executive Officer Sharon Houlihan encourages local residents to consider running as a councillor in 2024 and to access information about eligibility criteria, the nomination process, campaigning and being a councillor.

‘For anyone considering standing for election and becoming a councillor, council urges candidates to prepare adequately so that you understand the roles, responsibilities and opportunities,’ she said.

To be eligible for nomination, individuals must meet the following criteria:

Australian Citizenship: Candidates must be adult Australian citizens at the time of nomination. Voter Enrolment: Candidates must reside in the Central Highlands region and be enrolled on the Queensland State Electoral Roll. Eligibility to Stand: Candidates must not be disqualified under the Local Government Act 2009 from being elected or holding office as a councillor, view disqualification reasons. Nomination Process: Interested candidates should familiarise themselves with the nomination process and ensure all necessary documentation is completed and submitted before the specified deadline, view the Queensland Government website. Code of Conduct: Councillors must adhere to the highest ethical standards and be prepared to abide by the Code of Conduct for Councillors in Queensland set out by the state government, view the code of conduct. Enrol in ‘So you want to be a councillor or mayor?’ training: To run for mayor or councillor at the 2024 quadrennial election, you must complete the ‘So you want to be a Councillor’ course within six months of the nomination period commencing, regardless of whether you are a sitting mayor or councillor, or whether you have never been elected before.
