Wyndham City proposes to preserve the important bluestone landmark of Doherty’s House in Tarneit by converting it into a thriving cafe where the community can gather. Council is now calling for community feedback on the proposed concept plans.
Doherty’s House, built in the 1870s, was left in ruins following the 1969 bushfires which ravaged the area and destroyed the building’s wooden rafters, windows and outbuildings.
The ruins are an important example of the area’s European heritage and are protected by Council’s heritage overlay. Preservation works were completed on the site in 2022.
The proposed concept designs for Doherty’s House Café incorporate the original walls and chimney into a unique design, which includes:
A new pitched roof Exposed blue stone walls A commercial kitchen and servery/coffee counter Seating for up to 50 patrons inside A fenced garden for outdoor dining A small outbuilding incorporating toilets and a cool roomWyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, said the Doherty’s House Café was an inspired means of preserving the building and creating a functional space for families to enjoy.
“By incorporating the bluestone walls into a café, we’re able to retell the pastoral history of the area to new generations keeping alive this important aspect of our past while creating a lovely new space to enjoy with family and friends,” she said.
Wyndham City Councillor and City Design portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said: “Preserving our heritage is important. I’m proud of the work done to date to transform this bluestone ruin into an iconic place in Tarneit.”
“This place will thrive and become a central hub for families and kids that want to enjoy a meal or a coffee and experience what neighbourhood living should look and feel like.”
