Wyndham City is calling on residents to ensure they have emergency management plans in place as we approach the summer months.
Wyndham City aims to better understand residents’ thoughts on being emergency ready and is undertaking engagement, in keeping with objectives in the Resilient Wyndham Strategy.
An emergency preparedness brochure ‘Are you ready?’ was developed as a joint initiative between Melton City Council, Emergency Ready Communities and Wyndham City.
The brochure helps residents to safely prepare and respond to fires, storms and floods, heatwaves and other emergencies.
Wyndham Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, said resilience was about being prepared for the unexpected and that we can all play a part in building our resilience.
“With a rapidly growing population that fringes vast areas of grassland, we encourage our residents to keep their properties safe, clean and presentable to reduce the risk of grassfires and bushfires.”
“Other risks include structural fires, industrial accidents, transport accidents and in some areas floods.”
“Residents and visitors need to take charge of their own safety by heeding the warnings when they are alerted and by taking the necessary precautions - since assistance may not be able to reach them quickly in an emergency situation.”
“The Are you ready? brochure provides information on what to do to prepare for an emergency, what to do during an emergency and information and assistance for after an emergency.”
“The brochure also gives residents an action checklist and plan to help think through and prepare for what to do in an emergency situation.”
“With a hot summer on the horizon, we are seeking feedback on how we can best promote emergency preparedness to ensure we are catering to the needs of our community.”
“Victorian local governments have a legislated role in emergency management. At Wyndham City, we work closely with emergency services and community organisations to better assist our community during the response phase to an emergency event.”
