Each year the History Council of NSW celebrates History Week in the first week of September, setting a theme for member organisations to promote the history and heritage of their areas. This year the theme is Voices from the Past. On this theme, Lithgow City Council is hosting events promoting Lithgow’s local history and heritage in September at Lithgow Library and Eskbank House Museum.
‘The Voices from the Past theme is an opportunity to engage with the histories of those who were often voiceless in the past such as women, migrants, workers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Sometimes these voices were once heard but now sit forgotten in archives. At other times they have been ignored or all but erased’ (History Council https://historycouncilnsw.org.au/history-week-nsw/history-week-2023/)
To celebrate our local heritage and history Lithgow City Council invites you to visit the Eskbank House Museum. Enjoy the Lithgow City Council artwork exhibition, on display until the end of September, a free tour of the museum on Sunday 17 September 2023 for local residents and a guest speaker event followed by a heritage tourism discussion session on Thursday 28 September 2023 at 5.00pm at Eskbank House Museum.
Guest speaker Keith Painter presents a voice from the past – Deaconess Cordelia Moberly (and father) at St Paul’s, Lithgow. Cordelia Moberly served as a Deaconess at St Paul’s, Lithgow from September 1922 to January 1924. Her father Rev. E. G. Moberly, had preceded her as locum tenens at St Paul’s on several occasions in the early 1900’s.
‘The Moberly family story has connections with Bishops and Archbishops, the Suttors of Bathurst, pioneering photography, discoveries at the Mitchell Library, and great tragedies’ (2023, Keith Painter).
