Community Volunteer Award nominations opening soon

Community members are invited to nominate inspirational Corangamite Shire residents and groups for the 2024 Community Volunteer Awards.

Nominations for the Corangamite Shire Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards open Monday 11 September and close Friday 27 October.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein invited Corangamite Shire residents to nominate people and events who deserved recognition for their contributions to the community.

“This is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the many volunteers, individuals, groups and organisations that have contributed to the safety, wellbeing and connectedness of our community,” Cr Gstrein said.

“I encourage everyone to have a think and nominate someone who has given their time and energy to help others.

The awards will be presented at Skipton Mechanics Institute Hall on 26 January.

“We are working on two components to the day,” Cr Gstrein said.

“One is an acknowledgement and recognition of what the day means for Indigenous Australians in the morning in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.

“The Community Volunteer Awards will then be run as they have in the past, followed by a community barbecue and musical performance.

“These awards are an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals and groups in our community,” Cr Gstrein said.

“There are a lot of quiet achievers who help nurture our young people, care for the sick and elderly and the environment. They help run sporting and service clubs, rec reserves, pools and halls.

“There are so many ways that passionate contributors bring us together as a community.

“These awards give us the chance to say, ‘thank you’.”

Nomination forms and guidelines are available at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au/VolunteerAwards or by calling Council on 5593 7100.

Details of the entertainment and guest speaker will be confirmed closer to the date.
