The City of Albany and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services are pleased to announce a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing community safety and resilience.
In a first for Western Australia, newly developed Brigade Community Safety Coordinator positions are being established within each of the Southwest Sector Bushfire Brigades.
These coordinators will serve as catalysts for promoting community empowerment, public safety, building partnerships, resource efficiency, and enhancing trust within the City’s emergency services.
Brigade Community Safety Coordinators will take on a pivotal role in fostering communication, collaboration, and preparedness within our community, creating a safer and more resilient city.
Their mission is to engage residents, inform them about fire risks, and empower them to take proactive safety measures through dedicated and effective community engagement.
In addition to these critical roles, the City of Albany has secured funding to develop a Community Safety Trailer, which will carry a variety of resources to assist in community engagement.
Community Emergency Services Manager Brendan Gordon said the trailer will provide ease and convenience when engaging with community.
“One key resource within the trailer is a Burn Table, which simulates how fires spread and behave in different conditions,” he said.
“This is going to be an important part of the education process in helping residents to visualise fire behaviour.
“The City is committed to creating a safer and more resilient community for all residents. With the introduction of Brigade Community Safety Coordinators and the innovative Community Safety Trailer, we are taking significant steps towards achieving this goal.”
The City of Albany and Department of Fire and Emergency Services will begin conducting training workshops with the Brigade Community Safety Coordinators this month ahead of the fire season.
