The City of Hobart’s Youth ARC will roll out the (chalk) welcome mat this week for young migrant Australians.
As part of Welcoming Week, Youth ARC will host Young Migrant Education Program classes from Tas TAFE for a morning tea and to participate in an interactive chalk welcoming mat mural activity.
The multicultural students will be invited to share some of their stories and experiences at the entrance of the Youth ARC centre on Collins Street.
Filming of the event will also be used for social media.
This year’s Welcoming Week theme is #powerofplace.
Hobart’s Welcoming and Inclusive City Portfolio Chair Dr Zelinda Sherlock said the theme was ideal for new residents living in the City.
“This is a great opportunity to reflect on what it is that makes them feel welcome in Hobart before adding to the chalk welcome mat,” Cr Dr Sherlock said.
“But it is a theme we can all reflect on, not just the newest members of our community.
“Hobart has so much to offer, and it is great to support this event and provide an opportunity for many to share their story.”
Youth ARC provides a safe, creative space for younger members of the community to mix.
Abinash, 17-year-old from Nepal, moved to Hobart 10 years ago.
“Youth ARC has been a very welcoming place for me, it has given me the chance to make new connections and helped me feel at home in Hobart,” Abinash said.
“The staff are really welcoming here, especially Fab always playing table tennis with me and mentoring my creative hobby of dance and photography.”
Cr Dr Zelinda Sherlock said the capital wore its status as an official inclusive city with great pride.
“We often have the students come to Open Access Program after their Tas TAFE introduction, and its during open access that they have the opportunity to make connections and practice their English in a safe and inclusive setting,” Cr Dr Sherlock said.
“They also come to chill out, play games and explore their creative talents with the support of the Youth officers and volunteers who are all practicing artists.”
