Charters Towers Regional Council wishes to advise that a baiting campaign utilising 1080 Poison will soon be commencing, occurring throughout the region from 10 October until 9 November 2023.

Poison baits such as 1080 are one of the tools utilised to control wild dog numbers that are detrimental to livestock within the region.

Mayor Frank Beveridge advised that Council coordinates controlled baiting campaigns biannually to assist in increasing effectiveness of wild dog control.

“Our previous campaigns have been well received and supported by landowners within the region,” said Mayor Beveridge.

The wild dog baiting campaign is in response to reports council receives of small livestock attacks.

The circulation of the baits over a widespread area during key times throughout the breeding cycles allows for greatest effect.

Councillor Bernie Robertson, whose portfolio includes Pest and Animal Management, said it was pleasing to see so many property owners again on board for this campaign, allowing for maximum impact.

“Property owners have nominated if they wish to partake in the campaign.

“Working with us to bait on their land allows the completion of a successful campaign, hopefully delivering a solution to the issues they are facing when it come to wild dogs.

“Council invests a significant amount of time and resources to try and tackle this issue within the community,” Cr Robertson said.

Wild dogs are not just a Charters Towers Region issue, and the Council will continue to push and advocate for ratepayers not to bear the costs of wild dog control.
