Terang residents are invited to have their say on the future of new housing on McCrae Street.
Corangamite Shire Council has released a draft development plan for public consultation.
Deputy Mayor and Central Ward Councillor Geraldine Conheady said nine parcels of residential land on McCrae Street could support new housing growth in the medium to long term.
“Terang is the second largest town in the Shire but growth has been subdued over the past five years due to lack of available residential land,” Cr Conheady said.
“Census information shows the town’s population fell slightly between 2016-2021 (by 0.4%).
“The combined 18 ha on McCrae Street has the potential for about 150 residential blocks which would support the local economy by attracting key workers, with the increased population driving demand for local goods and services.”
Based on conversations with landowners, the draft plan considers existing infrastructure, transport network and services.
Water, electricity and communications are already available in McCrae Street which would simplify connecting new development.
The draft plan aims to provide a range of housing options while maintaining the town’s character and livability.
It looks to create safe public spaces with walking and cycling opportunities to the wetland and town centre, encouraging a connected community.
“Along with further landowner engagement, we also encourage the wider community to look at the draft development plan and provide feedback,” Cr Conheady said.
“As a Development Plan Overlay already exists on the land, consultation with the broader community is aimed at informing the community of the project and providing the option for those interested to read the draft plan and provide feedback, where appropriate.
“Community opinion is vital to the strategic planning process and Council will work with residents to ensure their concerns and aspirations are reflected in the final plan.”
For more information, community members can email [email protected] or call Strategic Planner Kristen Wilkes or Manager Planning and Building Services Aaron Moyne on 5593 7104.

Hard copies will be available to view at the Civic Centre in Camperdown.
