Capital Works Program Update - August 2023

Council has an ongoing program of capital works and upgrades to buildings, parks, playgrounds and roads across the Federation Council Region. The following activities were undertaken during August 2023 by Federation Council’s Operations Works teams. 

Balldale Road 8km reconstruction – LRCI Grant Works recommenced in August. Section 4km to 6km of bulk earthworks and widening in preparation of new gravel pavement in September.  North Street, Mulwala - Kerb & Channel and footpath New footpath, kerb and gutter and drainage have been installed on Corowa Road at North Street Mulwala and Lang Street Mulwala. Asphalting of the road surface in front of new kerb & gutter to be completed when contractors become available.  SRV Gravel Resheeting - Narrow Plains Road 1.35km west from Wangamong Road rail crossing. Sandy Ridges Road 2.3km south from Buraja Road.  Maintenance Grading Council secured funds from the NSW Government under the Regional Local Rural Road Repair Program to undertake road repairs on sealed and unsealed roads after the floods in late 2022. Council is using this grant to fund the maintenance grading of unsealed roads leading up to another large harvest season. See tables below of graded roads.  Table drain maintenance - Table drain maintenance focussed on customer requests during winter. Please Note: Works were carried out only in zones where no impact can be made on the Sloanes Froglet (between April and October breeding season).  Sealed Roads - Numerous customer requests for pothole repairs on sealed urban and rural roads have been received and actioned with the Corowa based Flocon patching truck and the Urana based Jet Master patching truck. Work is continuous on all roads such as: Federation Way south/north, Jerilderie Road, Boree Road, Urana/Boree/Morundah/Oakland and Rand township and rural roads. The impacts of the flooding and recent prolonged period of wet weather are still a significant issues that the operations staff are working hard to get on top of.  Maintenance Crew/Sundry Crew - Culvert installations/Repairs Patching with cold mix, Sign replacements, Guild posts, General maintenance in townships, Working on both construction jobs when needed. Flood damage repairs, Fulfilling customer requests, Floating plant throughout the shire, Operating loader in pits and stock piles, Table drain maintenance, Roadside tree sucker removal/spraying. Heavy Trucks - Carting waste/gravel for earthworks, culvert replacement on Cullivel Rd, Gravel carting for Balldale Road, Carting stone for patching trucks and Jetpatcher Carting excess spoil from Mulwala to Corowa Landfill for cover & capping.  TfNSW / RMCC Maintenance works under the RMCC agreement.  Quarries - Planning is well under way for the blasting of 100,000 tons of blast and crushing at the Balldale and Daysdale quarries. The gravels will be used for upcoming RRRP and capital works programs. Awaiting contractor. Slasher - Corowa Landfill Bynedale Rd Rand township and surrounds. Corowa Aerodrome - Twice weekly inspections carried out to ensure compliance with the MOS 139. Repairs to lights as required. Herbicide spraying on runway shoulders.  Construction 1 & 2 - Pothole repairs in unsealed urban roads. Corowa Road Mulwala North Street footpath, kerb & channel and drainage. Table drain maintenance, drainage and culvert works, urban and rural roads. Gravel patching urban unsealed roads.
