Congratulations Fremantle, we’ve just ticked over four years of FOGO collections!
Through the Better Bins Plus program, residents in the City of Fremantle, Town of East Fremantle and the City of Melville started separating their food organics and garden organics (FOGO) from their recycling and other household waste in 2019.
Since then, the three local governments have diverted a combined 74,000 tonnes of FOGO material from landfill, with the City of Fremantle collecting the equivalent weight of 254 Containbows!
The first FOGO bins were delivered to 11,000 households on High Street in September 2019. Now they’re in 99% of Fremantle residences, exceeding the City’s target of 80% by 2025 – an awesome achievement!
Around 60% of household rubbish is organic material. By capturing this in the FOGO bin, the nutrient rich material is converted to high-quality compost instead of going to landfill.
The City of Fremantle has been turning FOGO waste into compost and selling it at the Fremantle Recycling Centre since September 2021. It has also been using it in local parks since March this year.
Fremantle residents were some of the first in Perth to close the loop on FOGO waste by buying the FOGO-derived compost to use on their gardens.
FOGO compost is available at the Fremantle Recycling Centre in 25-litre bags or by the trailer load at the Landscape Yard in O’Connor.
Keep up the great work, Fremantle!
