As summer approaches and the temperatures rise, homeowners across the Central Highlands are gearing up to enjoy the warm weather in their backyard oasis.
With their inviting crystal-clear waters, swimming pools provide the perfect setting for relaxation and fun. However, with great enjoyment comes great responsibility.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children, and many of these tragedies occur in residential swimming pools.
As the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia National Drowning Report states:
Drowning deaths have increased by 20% since summer 2022[KB1] Tragically, deaths among children 0-4 years increased by 108% compared with summer 2022 (yes, that’s 108%!)Whether you have a pool or are looking to build one, council can help you understand the required regulations and safety measures.
‘Taking the right protocols such as fencing your pool not only prevents drowning accidents, but it’s also the law,’ said General Manager Communities John McDougall.
The definition of a pool includes any excavation or structure capable of being filled with water to a depth of 300 mm. This includes store-bought wading pools and spas.
Shannon Balison, Officer in Charge of the Ambulance Service in Emerald, mentions that adult supervision is critical for children of all ages, as drowning can happen to anyone at any age.
‘Let’s dive into safety protocols and swim in a sea of confidence!’ Mr McDougall said.
