Ghungalu Nunee the final piece of the puzzle

At a Blackwater Community Reference Group meeting in 2017 it was discussed that a family-friendly engaging space for locals and visitors was required in Blackwater.  After some further community consultation suggested scaling back the indigenous presence in the Memorial Garden, it was decided that a separate park be created to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the area instead.  

From this suggestion and after consultation with local indigenous groups, Ghungalu Nunee was born. 

The Blackwater Stories Precinct includes the Memorial Gardens and Lions Park, with an addition of a community garden in the former Blackwater Pool site as well as the Blackwater International Coal Centre, the Japanese Gardens and the new Ghungalu Nunee. It is expected that the space will attract Blackwater locals and families, education groups from across the region and the burgeoning tourist market. 

Ghungalu Nunee will be an iconic living landscape that showcases the rich connection between culture and nature in our region, a spine that connects it to the other landmarks in the precinct.  

Ghungalu Nunee is the ‘final piece of the puzzle’ in this major upgrade of the Blackwater community. This living site embraces a deeper understanding of the lands significance and encourages Indigenous tourism with its self-guided “Walking with the Elders” audio tour.
