Following approval at the ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday 26 September 2023, the City of Rockingham’s Draft Bushfire Risk Management Plan 2023 – 2027 is now open for public comment.
In line with State Government requirements, all local governments in Western Australia with significant bushfire risk are required to have a Bushfire Risk Management (BRM) Plan.
The City’s BRM Plan is an important strategic document that coordinates the City’s approach to the identification, assessment and treatment of assets across the community that are exposed to the risk of bushfire.
Ultimately, the City’s BRM Plan aims to manage bushfire risk in order to protect people, assets and other items of value across the City.
Given the large number of urban areas across the City that are located in close proximity to bushland, Mayor Deb Hamblin said it was important residents took the time to review the draft BRM Plan.
“There are a number of areas across the City that are prone to bushfires, and the BRM Plan identifies the risks and priority areas for treatment,” Mayor Hamblin said.
“Dealing with the threat of bushfires requires a collaborative approach from a number of stakeholders including the City, State Government land managers, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and private property owners.
The BRM Plan specifies the responsibilities of landowners and land managers for bushfire treatments. The City strongly encourages community members to familiarise themselves with this new plan and share their thoughts with us.Public comment on the draft BRM Plan will be open until Friday 27 October 2023.
