Categories

Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Active Citizenship are presented annually to local citizens and community organisation who have made outstanding contributions to the South Australian community.

The awards are provided by the Australia Day Council of South Australia and are administered by Local Government Authorities throughout the state on behalf of Councils.

Categories include:

Citizen of the Year

This is presented to someone making an extraordinary contribution to the community and may recognise outstanding service over a number of years. To be eligible, the person must be an Australian Citizen.

Young Citizen of the Year

This is presented to a young emerging leader who is making a difference in their community. To be eligible, the person must be an Australian Citizen aged over 16 years and under 30 years of age on January 26, 2022.

This is presented to the person or group who has staged the most outstanding event for their community. To be eligible, the person or group must be Australian Citizens.

Awards for Active Citizenship

This is presented to a person or group delivering outstanding work on an event or project for the community during the past calendar year. The person or group need not be Australian Citizens.

Australia Day Awards Committee

Alexandrina Council's Australia Day Awards are decided by an Australia Day Awards Committee. The committee is established as an Advisory Group reporting directly to Council.

The Committee makes recommendations to Council for the Australia Day Awards. The Council decides the successful recipients.

The Australia Day Awards Committee is established to manage the voting for Australia Day Awards in Alexandrina Council, which are conducted annually and within the guidelines as set by the Australia Day Council of South Australia and within the objectives set out in their Terms of Reference.

Australia Day Events

Alexandrina celebrates Australia Day with our Citizen of the Year and Citizenship Ceremonies in Goolwa and Strathalbyn in 2024.

Our nation celebrates the diverse and remarkable contributions of extraordinary Australians through the Australia Day Awards. A number of local citizenship awards will be presented, including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and Active Citizenship.

​​​​​​The Citizenship Ceremony finalises new residents' journey to becoming an Australian. Australian citizenship is an important common bond for all Australians, and lies at the heart of a unified, cohesive and inclusive Australia. The Australian Citizenship Ceremony will occur at Centenary Hall, Cadell St, Goolwa.

Event program and activities may be changed or be cancelled without prior notice.
