Federal Labor Senator for Victoria, Senator Raff Ciccone, officially broke ground on the Port Campbell Town Centre Revitalisation Project on Friday.
Senator Ciccone attended a sod-turning ceremony to mark the first large delivery stage of the project.
The Port Campbell Town Centre project is funded jointly by $6 million from the Victorian Government's Regional Infrastructure Fund, nearly $5.6 million from the Australian Government and $5 million from Corangamite Shire Council.
Senator Ciccone said: “By establishing a higher quality urban environment in Port Campbell, the town will be a more liveable space for residents and more attractive for tourists.”
“This is a great example of governments working together – federal, state and local – to invest in regional communities.”
“The Albanese Government is committed to supporting regional communities by investing in projects like the Port Campbell Town Centre Revitalisation Project.”
Victorian Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney said: “We’re proud to be backing this project which is a great example of all levels of government working together to benefit a community.”
“The residents of Port Campbell deserve a town centre they can be proud of, and one that will welcome the growing numbers of visitors exploring this beautiful region.”
Mayor Ruth Gstrein said it was a proud moment to mark the commencement of works on the foreshore section of the project.
“This is the biggest project Council has ever undertaken and we are grateful for the ongoing support from the Australian and Victorian governments.
“We are really blessed to have the internationally renowned natural beauty of the Great Ocean Road’s significant landmarks in our back yard.
“This obviously is the backbone of our Shire’s tourism economy with all the benefits it brings for local businesses and workers.
“After years of planning, design and community consultation, these works aim to ensure the town centre and foreshore meet the needs of locals and visitors, especially during peak tourism times.
“It’s terrific to have Senator Ciccone here to see first-hand what the Government’s funding will deliver.
“The ceremony in the works area near the fountain will be an opportunity to discuss the works with Civilnow contractors, the project manager and workers involved in the project.”
