Published on 11 October 2023

Upper Hunter Shire Council is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards are now open. These esteemed awards recognise and celebrate individuals in Upper Hunter Shire who have made outstanding contributions to the community and excelled in their respective fields. In line with the broader spirit of Australia Day, a time to reflect, respect, and celebrate the contributions of all Australians, the award categories are:

Citizen of the Year Young Citizen of the Year (Under 25) Local Champion of the Year Sustainability & Environmental Achievement Award (Merriwa District)

After the district awards are determined by the District Australia Day Committees, Council will select an overall Shire Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year from the winners of the above categories.

Eligibility for these awards is broad, and anyone can be nominated. Council encourages community members to submit their nominations online through Council's website or pick up nomination forms at Council Administration Offices located in Scone, Merriwa, and Murrurundi. The deadline for nominations is 4pm on Friday, 10 November 2023.

Mayor Maurice Collison emphasised the importance of community participation in the nominations, "I urge everyone in Upper Hunter Shire to take this opportunity to nominate individuals who embody the true spirit of Australia Day. These awards are not merely ceremonial; they offer a meaningful way to shine a light on those who make our community a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic place to live."
