Nominations now open for Baw Baw's 2024 Australia Day awards

Baw Baw’s 2024 Australia Day Awards’ nominations are now open, with community members encouraged to nominate local achievers who have made outstanding contributions to Baw Baw Shire community life.  

“The annual Australia Day Awards are a true celebration of community”, says Mayor of Baw Baw Shire, Annemarie McCabe. “They are the perfect opportunity to shine a light on the unsung heroes in Baw Baw who go above and beyond and dedicate their time to contribute to our vibrant local community.”

Nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards can be made across four categories:

Citizen of the Year An individual who demonstrates hard work, dedication and provides a significant contribution to the community in the current year or over a number of years. They demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and /or are a role model for their community members or organisations; or excel in one of the areas of arts or culture, sport and recreation, business, the environment or community service. Young Citizen of the Year An individual who is 25 years of age or under on 26 January 2024 and who demonstrates outstanding leadership skills and/or are a role model for their community members or organisations; or has either made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or has given outstanding service for the local community over a number of years. Community Organisation of the Year An organisation or group who has performed outstanding community service to the local community, either during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years; has demonstrated that they meet a community need or priority and has provided exceptional service to the community; and operates within the municipality. Community Event of the Year A community event held within the municipality during the past year which was demonstrably organised by a not-for-profit group or organisation.

“I encourage everyone in Baw Baw to think about the incredible people in your life who are worthy of wider recognition and put forward a nomination to highlight their amazing work,” says Mayor McCabe.

How to nominate:

Nominations can be made online via a short submission form on Council’s website.

When submitting a nomination, community members must provide responses to various questions relating to the recipient including, qualities that make them stand out, details of their contributions and the positive impact they’ve made to the local community.

Nominations are open until Friday 24 November, 2023.

Each recipient nomination will be considered and assessed against eligibility criteria by a panel consisting of the Mayor, Councillors and Council officers who will select the most outstanding nominee in each category.

Award winners will be announced at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony in January 2024.
