Youth Events Delight and Inspire During School Holidays
Federation Council 17 Oct 2023

Youth across the region enjoyed activities hosted by Federation Council with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) flair. The event series was proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Office for Regional Youth Holiday Break Program.

Participants from Corowa, Howlong, Yarrawonga and Mulwala took their creative writing to the next level at the Parallel Wilds workshops held at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort. Creative Director Craig Dent facilitated the group of youth aged 10-16 through the program which captured the imagination of participants and provided a modern and unique platform for storytelling.

The program offered a variety of ways for the youth to get creative, with participants exploring virtual reality technologies, initiating in-depth conversations covering everything from artificial intelligence to varroa mites, to democratically deciding the plots, soundtrack and characters of the group project. Participants also gained a new appreciation for their local environment, identifying and documenting over 40 species of flora and fauna on their bushwalk exploration through Gorman Park in Mulwala.

The resulting multimedia short story titled ‘Generation Gamma’ which can be experienced online or with a VR headset, is one of eight projects Craig will be showcasing at Supernova and Comic-Con in 2024. To view the project, visit parallelwilds.com.

Youth and adults alike puzzled their way through games and snacked on a delicious lunch at the Urana and Howlong Board Game Days. The array of new board games acquired including Guess Who, Chess, Klask and many more, will be available to play across the Federation Library network.

In the final days of the school holidays, avid video gamers came together to battle it out at the Video Game Tournament. Participants tested their skills playing Rocket League to win JB Hi-Fi vouchers and bragging rights. Corowa Libraries’ two new gaming computers were officially launched with much enthusiasm as a total of 18 matches were played across the tournament.

Corowa Libraries’ video game titles currently includes Rocket League, Among Us, Minecraft Classic, Sims 4, Halo Infinite, Team Fortress 2, Fortnite and Stardew Valley and is continuing to expand. The gaming computers are free for the public to use and are currently available for bookings. Contact Corowa Library on (02) 6033 8941 or visit to book.
