19 October 2023 Fire Ban for Mareeba Shire

Mayor Angela Toppin, chair of the Mareeba Local Disaster Management Group, would like to remind residents that a local fire ban has been declared from 0001 hours Thursday, 19 October 2023, to 2359 hours on Monday, 23 October 2023, across Local Government Areas in North Queensland, including Mareeba Shire.

Mayor Toppin explained, “With multiple fires burning across the region and with the current fire conditions and weather, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) have issued a ban on lighting fires in the open.”

“Unfortunately, some fires are being treated as suspicious. If you notice any suspicious activity in relation to the fires, I urge you to pass that information on to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000. If your life is in danger, call triple zero”.

There are several exemptions that apply for the fire ban. Lawn mowers and mechanical slashers may still be used but please use extreme care and make sure there is adequate equipment to extinguish a fire in case one starts. QFES also recommends having a person to spot fires just in case an ignition occurs.

“This fire season is shaping up to be a big one, and it is absolutely vital that the community plays its part to reduce their bush fire risk. Take this opportunity to understand your risk as people living in bushland and rural areas are generally at a higher risk then urban residents”, Mayor Toppin stated.
