If your property was built before 1980, it is likely to contain lead-based paint. Lead in paint is toxic and can be harmful to your health, particularly for those who are pregnant, young children and pets.
Lead Poisoning Prevention Week: 22 – 29 October
Buildings and homes built before 1980 may contain lead-based paint.
This International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, SA Health are raising awareness about the options available for managing lead-based paint.
If you live in or own an older home or building it is important to regularly assess the condition and location of painted surfaces to ensure people are safe from lead hazards.
There could be a risk of lead exposure if lead-based paint begins to deteriorate or is disturbed while renovating, restoring or repainting.
If you’re unsure, consult a painting contractor. They can inspect the surface and advise on next steps.
There is no safe level of lead exposure. Lead can be harmful to people of all ages, but the risk of health effects is highest for pregnant people, infants and young children.
