Gannawarra Shire Council has recognised its dedicated group of volunteers who have supported numerous services aligned with its Community Care team.
Council hosted a thank-you lunch for its Meals on Wheel and Gannawarra Non-Emergency Transport Service volunteers at cluBarham on Monday, 23 October, with the event marking the end of an era as these services transition to Northern District Community Health following Council’s decision to withdraw from providing Aged and Disability Services.
“Our volunteers who have assisted with Council’s Community Care services have provided amazing support for our residents and staff,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“Whether it involved spending a few hours each month delivering hot meals or providing transport to medical appointments, our volunteers have helped our senior residents keep connected with their community.”
Council also used the event to praise volunteers who continued to assist with its program following the COVID-19 pandemic and October-December 2022 floods, which resulted in alternative arrangements put in place.
“Volunteering is the lifeblood of small rural communities, and we thank all of our volunteers for continuing to provide a high quality of service to our residents,” Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Roger Griffiths said.
