Visitors to the central business districts within the Gannawarra are urged to adhere to parking restrictions in place along key streets, especially as Christmas nears.
Timed parking arrangements are in place throughout Cohuna and Kerang, with these limits designed to make it easier for shoppers to access local businesses.
“The eight weeks before Christmas is usually a busy time for our traders as shoppers look for gifts and stock up on items for family celebrations,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“People who park in spaces incorrectly or longer than the advertised time period are impacting on the trade of local businesses, as shoppers planning to shop in the Gannawarra may choose to go elsewhere if they cannot park close to their desired destination.”
Council staff will spend the weeks leading up to Christmas randomly checking that motorists are adhering to car parking time limits, with those who do not adhere to these guidelines facing fines of $96.00.
Council is also appealing to motorists to respect the purpose of accessible car parks and not park in these spaces unless they have a permit.
“Accessible car parking spaces are designed to make it a little easier for a person with a significant disability or injury to access local shops and medical facilities,” Mr Rollinson said.
“By parking in accessible parking spaces when you are not adhered to, you are creating additional challenges for person with a disability and risk being fined.”
