Wembley Ward Councillor Ben Mayes has been selected as the Town of Cambridge’s new Deputy Mayor by his fellow elected members during the 31 October Ordinary Council Meeting.

With more than 15 years of experience in the financial services sector, Cr Mayes brings his skills and commitment to enhancing community engagement and diversity to his new role.

Cr Mayes is actively involved in various Town committees and working groups, including the Development Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee. He also contributes to internal and external working groups and committees.

Reflecting on his election, the Deputy Mayor outlined his aim to get more people involved in matters that affect the Town’s suburbs.

“Council makes hundreds of decisions every year, which is why it's crucial to include the voices of our community and local businesses,” he said.

Since joining Council in August 2022, Cr Mayes believes he has gained a thorough understanding of local government regulations and the Town's policies, procedures, and local laws.

“I am committed to working in collaboration with our Mayor and Councillors so, together, we can deliver great outcomes for our community.

“I am passionate about getting more people involved in local government. As your elected Deputy Mayor, I will continue with this advocacy work to encourage further diverse representation in our community,” Cr Mayes said.

“I am committed to representing the Town with the utmost professionalism at all times and look forward to working with my fellow elected members and the Administration to write Cambridge’s next chapter as your Deputy Mayor.”

Mayor Gary Mack welcomed Cr Mayes’ appointment as his delegate.

“I have worked alongside Cr Mayes for more than a year and witnessed his dedication to community engagement and advocacy,” Mayor Mack said.

“I look forward to working closely with him to deliver positive outcomes for our community. Together, we will strive to create a brighter and more inclusive future for the residents and businesses that call Cambridge home."
